Advancing Gender Equality at the University of Port Harcourt

Gender Equality Policy Project (GEPP) of the University of Port Harcourt in partnership with Bournemouth University United Kingdom, the University of Port Harcourt is taking a significant step towards a more equitable future with the launch of its Gender Equality Policy. This project is not just a document; it’s a commitment to action. We aim to transform our campus into a place where everyone, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities to succeed. This policy will address systemic inequalities and promote a culture of respect and inclusion.

About GEPP

Mission

To develop, implement, and sustain a comprehensive Gender Equality Policy that eliminates gender-based discrimination, promotes equal opportunities, and cultivates a culture of respect and inclusion for all students, faculty, and staff at the University of Port Harcourt, in partnership with Bournemouth University.

Vision

A University of Port Harcourt where gender equality is fully realized, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where all individuals thrive, contribute, and reach their full potential, regardless of gender.

Objectives:

  • Develop a robust and comprehensive Gender Equality Policy that addresses systemic inequalities and promotes gender equality across all aspects of university life.

  • Raise awareness and enhance understanding of gender equality issues within the university community through targeted training, workshops, and communication campaigns.

  • Ensure equal opportunities for all genders in recruitment, admissions, promotions, leadership roles, access to resources, and participation in university activities.

  • Foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and belonging where all individuals feel valued, safe, and empowered.

  • Establish clear mechanisms for reporting and addressing gender-based discrimination and harassment, while monitoring the policy’s effectiveness through data collection and regular reviews.

  • Strengthen partnerships with Bournemouth University and engage with relevant stakeholders to share best practices and enhance the policy’s impact.

✔ Expect increased engagement with the wider community on issues of gender equality and social justice.

✔ Expect to see a more balanced representation of all genders in leadership positions, faculty roles, and student enrollment across different disciplines.

✔ Expect to see increased research and innovation related to gender equality and related issues.

✔ Expect the Gender Equality Policy to be a living document that is regularly reviewed, updated, and implemented effectively to ensure sustainable change over time.

✔ Expect active participation and support from all members of the university community in implementing and upholding the principles of the policy.

✔ Expect transparent processes for reporting, investigating, and addressing instances of gender-based discrimination and harassment.
